Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) CoverLocks

CoverLocks for conservation, recognizes that the future of North Dakota wildlife must spring from the productivity of private lands.  The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has partnered with USDA and private agricultural producers in this $44 million long-term relationship that creates new and better financial incentives for producers, establishes habitat for wintering wildlife, and provides public access.

The CoverLock complex involves a quarter (160 acres) of land on which a 20-acre CoverLock is established.  The CoverLock consists of a 5-acre wildlife tree planting, 10 acres of herbaceous cover, and a 5-acre food plot.  NRCS provides assistance in planning and application; the Farm Service Agency and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department provide financial assistance.  Fifty-six North Dakota farmland owners have applied to take advantage of the economics of the program.  The program is currently available in 16 North Dakota counties.
