Apple Creek Long Lake Watershed
Description of Watershed
The total estimated area in the watershed is 2,343,341 acres. This watershed is located in parts of Burleigh, Emmons, Kidder, Logan, Sheridan, Stutsman, and Wells Counties located in Central and South Central North Dakota.
Land uses in this watershed consist of rangeland, dry cropland, pastureland and irrigated cropland. The topography ranges from nearly level to rolling, with steeper areas along rivers. Land use is a mosaic of cropland and rangeland and most of the soils in the watershed are moderately deep and deep, well drained and moderately well drained.
In cropland areas of the watershed, there are about 1,708 farms covering about 1,716,610 acres. The average size farm is 1,005 acres. Primary crops include wheat, corn, sunflowers, barley, and oats. Other crops include alfalfa, soybeans, potatoes, flax, and canola.
In rangeland areas of the watershed, the average farm consists of about 498 acres of grazing lands covering about 850,800 acres. Ranches are mostly cow/calf and dairy production operations.
Pastureland in the watershed comprises about 89,600 acres. Much of this is improved pasture grass species such as bromegrass and various wheatgrass species.
