Farmable Wetlands Program

The Agricultural Appropriations Act authorized the Farmable Wetlands Pilot (FWP) Program for the enrollment of certain wetlands and buffer acreage on a pilot basis into Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).  The FWP is designed to allow farmers to enroll small wetlands and a grass buffer to enhance the wetlands.

Small Wetlands (5 acres or less) which have been cropped 3 of the last 10 years, are eligible for enrollment.  A grass buffer, at least 30 feet surrounding the wetland, is a necessary component of the CRP contract.  The buffer, designed to filter sedimentation, may extend 150 feet in width or 3 times the wetland acreage in size, whichever is larger.  Program participants may choose contracts to be effective from 10 to 15 years.  Drained or manipulated wetlands will be restored to the extent possible.

Restoring wetlands will reduce downstream flood damage, improve surface and groundwater quality, and recharge groundwater supplies.  Wetlands provide vital habitat for migratory birds and many wildlife species, including threatened and endangered species, and provide recreational opportunities such as bird watching and hunting.
